I’m engulfed with a desire to become a teacher who evokes excitement in students of the modern world. I want to study secondary education with a focus on English so I can do just this! My previous work with students on playwriting insight my curiosity to teach reading and writing specifically to high school students. My undeniable drive to learn about teaching English, using technology, and creating hands-on experiences in public school classrooms are my ultimate goals after doing student teaching.
After graduating from The University of the Arts as a National Collegiate Scholar with a BFA in Directing, I was hired as a Teaching Artist for Philadelphia Young Playwrights (PYP). As a teaching artist, I coached high students, both individually and in groups, on writing original plays over the course of a semester. My interest for education really sparked while giving student feedback on his writing. He turned to me and expressed, “Most teachers don’t get me, but you get me.” This type of interaction would become a trend and tend to repeat itself as I grew and moved into a new position as Program Facilitator with Education Works.
While working with Education Works, I became Lead Teacher of the after-school program held at Overbrook High School. This role wears many hats in order to give the teenagers proper attention, constructive feedback, and overall guidance for growing into a world after high school. Learning to use one’s free-time constructively was a daily lesson at the high school. This is why I initiated “Wellness Wednesdays” and led yoga and meditation sessions for the students. Through Education Works, I, also, assisted in many ways to help students graduate high school and apply to college, giving the teenagers goals to strive towards.
After working at Education Works I became a substitute teacher for the Philadelphia School District. This position exposed me to a wide variety of classrooms and schools throughout the city. It has been an incredibly eye-opening and rewarding experience. Spending time with students in the classroom on a daily basis is a constant reminder of why continuing my education is such an imperative step not only for my career but for those children growing up and learning in this modern world. Those tiny compliments from students like, “You’re the best teacher!” and bursts of excitement like “You get me. Will you be my teacher?” will forever be the fuel to my fire that keeps me striving towards my goals.
After spending some time experiencing education in grad school, I believe it is time to take the necessary steps to become a high school English teacher. I look forward to gaining much-needed field experience. After graduating, I will utilize my certification and become a high school English teacher in the Philadelphia School District. With more professional experience under my belt, I will then continue my education again and work towards focusing in Special Education. One step at a time, I will strive to make an impact and leave a fingerprint with the students of the city as they grow into the modern world.
