January 27th: Today we began gathering evidence for essays. It was a pretty smooth day overall. I am still getting used to taking attendance, and the overall multi-tasking that goes into doing a do now or leading a lesson at the same time. Many more students tend to be late on an online platform I’ve noticed. I also noticed a couple of students dip out early today because it was a writing day, and they didn’t think I would notice.
Reflection: When I look back on the earlier days of taking on more responsibilities for student teaching I can really get a sense of the fear I was experiencing with multi-tasking. Doing a Do-Now, taking attendance, and letting kids in at the same time was very overwhelming for me at first. Now I’m at a place where I feel very confident about the practice of these procedures, and how to stay on track while 5 things are happening at once. On the other hand, the students who were dipping out early before still continue to do the same thing. Or coming late, and leaving early. Students that have been dealing with the type of issues often are ones that having parents working, or who are ill. Even with parent communication, it’s hard for them to get their kid logged in when they aren’t around. This is a problem I have yet to come up with in the virtual world, but maybe things will be better when we go back in person. I feel like I have certainly learned a lot about how to multi-task during the first 15 minutes of class, but this probably won’t be as difficult in an in-person setting. My hopes are that in-person classes will bring more positivity, and attendance in the future with students. This isn’t a sustainable environment for children to learn.
